Breakfast Club Too Hot For Tone Loc

Tone Loc's voice sounds like he gargles with gravel. Confession, I love it. I was thrilled when a friend at work gave me tickets to see Tone Loc at the Breakfast Club http://www.that80sclub.com/ on Friday August 8. I had never been to the Breakfast Club and was thrilled to be immersed again in the 80's music of my youth. All three levels of the club were packed by the time Tone Loc took the small stage at midnight.

The crowd was in the palm of Tone Loc's hand when he launched into "Funky Cold Medina" for his second song. Tone then switched gears with an energetic cover of "Rapper's Delight". Next up was a shout out battle between the guys and girls over the AC/DC "Back and Black" beat. The guys lost, which Tone claimed happened at every city on his tour.

The temperature in the club was too hot due to the capacity crowd. A girl in front of my friend Jimmy and I had to leave due to the heat as did other ladies who made their way through the crowd. About fifteen minutes into Tone Loc's set he froze up. From my vantage point of about twenty feet away it appeared he was angry and starring at someone to the left of the stage. Two bouncers dragged Tone off the stage and the DJ immediately played the "Wild Thing" video. No one seemed to mind this and the dancing continued. We left after twenty minutes as I am old, not hip, and a Mild Thing.

I did a quick search and found Tone Loc had a seizure while on stage in Charlotte back in January at Buckwild Saloon.

On Saturday I heard from a friend that Tone Loc left the stage due to heat exhaustion but returned around 1 a.m. to perform "Wild Thing" before departing. Mr. Loc is much more of a trooper than I am. My wife commented I was probably the only "clubber" who came home and put on a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) mask for sleep apnea. Oh, well. At least I had a couple of blue Funky Cold Medinas.
